Dr. Elizabeth “Brooke” Spencer, MD, FSIR is a board-certified interventional radiologist, currently serving as Medical Director and CEO of Minimally Invasive Procedure Specialists in Denver, Colorado. She also holds the position of Medical Director of Interventional Radiology at Littleton Adventist Hospital. Her clinical focus includes complex venous disorders such as chronic deep vein thrombosis (DVT), May–Thurner syndrome, pelvic venous congestion, and uterine fibroids.
Originally from New England, Dr. Spencer earned her medical degree from the University of Vermont College of Medicine and has been practicing interventional radiology for 25 years. She has spent her career focused on complex deep vein work and has become a national and international referral center for complex reconstruction of the inferior vena cava and iliac veins. This then naturally morphed into an interest in newly developed discoveries for treatment of the deep pelvic veins to help patients with postural orthostatic tachycardia, pelvic pain, bladder and bowel symptoms, and a myriad of other issues.
Through her collaboration with Dr. Cutchins, she developed a deep understanding of the interaction of venous pooling as it contributes to orthostatic intolerance and dysautonomia. She was introduced to Dr. Vaughn, a world renowned expert in long COVID where many patients also develop orthostatic symptoms, shortness of breath chronic fatigue in addition to many symptoms overlapping with patients with iliac vein compression including low back pain, lower extremity neuropathy and pelvic pain. The 3 of them have collaborated to learn as much as possible about patients with complex difficult to diagnose medical diseases and are now collaborating in the development of SAFIRE to raise money to fund research, promote education and develop resources for patients who have often seen many providers for these complex medical issues without clear answers. This is very exciting to be a part of this movement and she is very humbled to have the opportunity to work with dedicated experts in the fields outlined on the SAFIRE website who share a similar vision.
Helping care for patients in a population that has been overlooked and misunderstood has been even more rewarding than anticipated and is given new life to a long career and a new direction.
